Ponta do Sol

Ponta do Sol

“...the captain got back in the skiffs and came to a point...that comes well out into the sea, and because in the rock on this point one can see from afar off, a round vein can be clearly seen with rays that look like the sun (sol)...”

Gaspar Frutuoso, 16th cent

The municipality of Ponta do Sol is located on the South coast of the island of Madeira, made up of three parishes, Ponta do Sol (municipal seat), Canhas and Madalena do Mar.  Considered to be the warmest municipality on the island and where the sun shines for the most number of hours, the village is located in a privileged spot near the sea.   Although it has been essentially a farming area with the development of the cultivation of sugar cane in the first phase, and now more recently with the cultivation of bananas, horticulture and floriculture, the municipality of Ponta do Sol has also started to stake more and more on the development of the service sector, an effort that can be seen in the appearance of restaurants, bars and cafes.

Patrimony:
The parish church is dedicated to N.a Senhora da Luz, and was built in the late 15th century. Besides the precious religious ornaments, notable features here include the Hispanic-Arabic ceiling of the main chapel and the mudéjar-style baptismal font, the only one of its kind in the country, being a gift from the king, D. Manuel.  The Lugar de Baixo (or Zino) mansion has been restored and is an important example of the architectural patrimony of Madeira that charms everyone with its romantic style and natural surroundings. The mansion and adjoining chapel were built at the end of the 19th century.

Nature and activities:
For those who love nature and walks, the municipality of Ponta do Sol is an area with a lot to offer, above all due to its heritage of nature, the richness of which is very evident, for example, at Moledos, in Madalena do Mar, a site included in the Natura 2000 Network, the principal aim of which is to conserve endangered wild species. The walks along the levadas are also a feature found in the municipality, outstanding among them the Levada do Moinho, which is somewhat demanding of walkers in terms of physical fitness, but it provides excellent panoramic views over Ponta do Sol and the mouth of the brook flowing through the village. Another excellent walk is the Levada Nova da Lombada, where one can find various regional endemic species of flora as well as see some species of birds along the trail. Besides these two walks, there are other walks worth mentioning, such as Levada Nova dos Canhas and Levada da Bica da Cana.
